Support
Common situations and what to do about them are below. If your answer isn't here, write to support@afarwindow.com with the versions of macOS and iPadOS and what you were doing when it happened.
Connecting
The iPad doesn't show the Mac
Check that Afar Window Host is running, with its icon in the menu bar, and that both devices are on the same network. The iPad needs Local Network access, which you can turn on for Afar Window in Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network on the iPad.
Some networks, such as public Wi-Fi, keep devices apart. In that case, add the Mac's address on the iPad by hand; you can copy it from the Mac's menu bar panel. If the Mac's firewall is on, allow incoming connections for Afar Window Host. It uses port 47420.
The iPad says the Mac's identity has changed
This appears after Afar Window Host has been reinstalled or its data deleted. Delete the Mac on the iPad, then add it and pair again.
The pairing codes don't match
Don't click Allow on the Mac. Codes that don't match mean the connection may not run directly between your iPad and your Mac. Disconnect and try again; if they still differ, try another network.
The picture stutters or lags
The top of the sidebar shows picture latency, frame rate and bandwidth, and the path diagnostics measure each path in turn. On a slow network, choose the smoothest preset in the sidebar's quality settings, or lower the frame rate and bit rate. When both devices share a network, the local network is usually the fastest path.
Picture and input
The picture is black
Check that Afar Window Host is turned on in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording on the Mac. After allowing it, reopen the app.
Taps and typing do nothing
Check that Afar Window Host is turned on in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility on the Mac.
The Mac can't be reached after a restart or logout
When the Mac is locked, the iPad shows its lock screen and you can type the password to unlock it; a display that has gone dark is woken. When the Mac is at the login window after starting up or logging out, though, this version can't connect. Log in on the Mac once first.
Sound and dictation
Dictation doesn't respond
Check three things: the virtual microphone is installed on the Mac; the dictation app's microphone, Spokenly's for example, is set to Afar Window Microphone; and the dictation shortcut in the iPad's action button settings matches the dictation app's. The default is ⌥S, Spokenly's default shortcut.
The Mac has no sound after disconnecting
The Mac's own sound is muted while connected and restored on disconnect. If it isn't, reopen Afar Window Host, which restores it on launch, or unmute the Mac in its sound settings.
Uninstalling
Mac
First remove the virtual microphone in the Sound section of Afar Window Host's settings, which needs an administrator password. Then turn off Open at Login, quit the app, and move Afar Window Host from the Applications folder to the Bin.
To also delete the pairing information, delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Afar Window Host. If you install it again later, the iPad will need to pair again.
iPad
Delete Afar Window. The saved Macs, settings and usage records are deleted with it.
